Child of Storm

Child of Storm is a novel by H. Rider Haggard, first published in 1913. It is the sixth book chronologically in the Allan Quatermain/Ayesha series of novels. Set in the mid-nineteenth century in Zululand, the book is the story of Mameena, a beautiful African girl and the daughter of a lower level chief. With high ambitions to rise amongst the social ranks but limited by a patriarchal society, she uses her beauty to manipulate the men around her, including the English hero, Allan Quatermain. The novel references the real life succession struggle between Cetshwayo and Umbelazi, the two sons of the Zulu king Mpande, that culminated in the Battle of Ndondakusuka (called the Battle of the Tugela in the book).
